James C. Irwin, the son of William and Elizabeth “Betsy” Irwin, was born in Sterling on August 9, 1838. He spent his life in the Town of Sterling where he served as Justice of the Peace. James married first Emma Fredenburgh who died July 22, 1874. He married second Sarah Ida Hammond. James died in Hannibal on February 7, 1912 at the age of 73.
